Land Rover needs little introduction to the luxury shopping community.
The iconic British company owns almost exclusive rights to the top of the luxury SUV mountain — at least for those with eyes below the two-hundred-and-up club dominated by Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The flagship, full-size Range Rover is Land Rover's crown jewel. However, the smaller Range Rover Sport model is the best-selling Land Rover in America.
Lots of power, lots of posh
Like most vehicles in the Land Rover stable, the Range Rover Sport comes in a variety of trims. And before we start talking about "value," it's worth noting: All Land Rovers are expensive. At the bottom of the totem pole sits the SE, with prices starting at $68,650. Above that is the HSE, which starts at $74,250, and at the top of the heap is the fire-breathing SVR, coming in at $114,500. Buyers can choose from a range of engines — petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid — although 4WD comes standard (this is a Land Rover, after all).
In the upper middle of the lineup lives the HST trim. Equipped with an updated version of Land Rover's homemade Ingenui inline 6-cylinder engine, the HST delivers 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover boosts that power with a 48-volt mild hybrid system designed to save gas and pump less emissions into the atmosphere. Starting price? Goldilocks $82,950.
